Capability
Custom software
Building the thing that does not exist yet, when the off-the-shelf version is the constraint.
What it is
Integrations, internal tools, portals, calculators and the connective tissue between systems that were never designed to talk to each other.
When it is the answer
When a genuine bottleneck has no product that solves it, when manual work between two systems is losing opportunities, or when something your business does uniquely well is trapped in a spreadsheet.
When it is not
Most of the time. Custom software is the most expensive answer on this page and the easiest to talk yourself into. If a configuration change to an existing tool gets you 80% of the way, take it.
What we do with it
- Push hard on whether existing tooling can do it first
- Build the smallest thing that removes the bottleneck
- Handle limited development capacity inside the retainer; scope anything major separately and say so up front
- Document and hand over what your team should own permanently
- Treat maintenance as a real cost rather than an afterthought
What it looks like when it is working
A step that used to consume a person's week happens on its own, and nobody is afraid of the system that does it.
The mistake we see most often
Building before diagnosing. Custom software built around a broken process makes the broken process permanent and expensive to change.
